An Industrial Product Design For The Future

University of Toronto researchers at IATSL(Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab) are developing an industrial product design to help patients with Alzheimer’s and Dementia in their daily routines. Although still in the research phase, MAKO Design + Invent yearns for innovative ideas that have potential. We love to know that people are out there, constantly working to improve our living conditions. We especially love when these individuals are from one of our homes—Toronto.

Functions of the Industrial Product Design

The industrial product design is a mobile robot designed for older adults with cognitive disabilities to assist them with their daily functions. The robot is aimed to relieve caregivers from spending their time helping with small tasks and focusing more on spending valuable time with patients. Unlike our conventional understanding of robots operating as servants, this industrial product design will function with a system of sensors that are able to speak and interact with patients. The device targets people at their early stages of cognitive disabilities and assists them by going through a step by step process on how to do things like making a cup of tea, turning on a water tap, washing hands, and even reminds them to turn off the stove after usage. On the robot, a video screen as well as voice instructions are provided to patients with the necessary reminders for their daily tasks.

Beyond the benefits of having this industrial product design as an assistive device, there is also a financial advantage. It eliminates the cost of hiring individuals for additional services such as cooking and recreational activities. Alternatively, the research team behind this device intends to make the robot affordable to communities, in hopes to make it easily accessible to individuals with cognitive disabilities.
