Communication Intern at Mako | MAKO Design + Invent

Hello From the Social Media and Communications Intern!

October 14, 2014

Hello! This is Advita, signing in from MAKO Design + Invent. It’s my first day as the social media and communications intern here and I was, embarrassingly enough, extremely late. Totally my fault, I was born directionally challenged and I’m afraid even Google Maps can’t save me. But I’m here now, and I’m extremely excited to be a part of this great team!

First impressions – I love the red walls, the lake view, and the music – yes there is music – which everyone works to. I’m a tad bit nervous I suppose, but also extremely optimistic about this new opportunity; one that will hopefully open a lot doors for me in the future!

You’re probably wondering why I’m here in the first place. Well, let me tell you a bit about myself and how I ended up at MAKO. I was born and raised in Dubai and moved to Toronto in 2010. The past four years have been a bit of a blur with far too many caffeine overdosed, sleepless nights that have resulted in me successfully obtaining an Architectural Science degree from Ryerson University. My experiences through University taught me a lot, especially about myself, and I soon realised that the technicalities involved in the architectural field were not for me.

An opportunity to work as a graphic designer for a student-run organisation cropped up in my fourth year of University and I jumped on it, not knowing what it would lead to. That was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made till date as I got to experience a whole other side to designing that I had been unfamiliar with. Here, I was exposed to the basics of social media strategies and branding campaigns, and I learned a great deal about layouts, typography and visually presenting ideas to the general public.

And that’s why I’m here.

Design has always been my passion and when I stumbled upon this opening at MAKO Design + Invent, it seemed like the perfect fit for me. I believe that design and communication come hand in hand; one is incomplete without the other. I am a huge advocate of using social media as an advertising tool and understand that good design coupled with an effective marketing strategy can influence societies and truly enhance their way of life. I hope my time here at MAKO can help me learn the ropes and find my footing in this field. I expect that this internship will make up for my lack of ‘formal training’ and help me on my way to becoming a designer!

Four hundred and thirty-one words so far; I think that means I can start wrapping up this blog post. I assume you’ll be hearing from me soon, seeing as how communicating is what I’m here to do! So step outside, enjoy the weather before the terrible snowstorms take over, and look forward to my next post! Over and out.
